o shows he hasn't figured out the pulpit thing yet. the us sees itself very differently from the way it is perceived. it must address this mirror question if it is to be persuasive. first look at yourself.

eg concentrate on fixing america's issues before lecturing others. so how many us people who tortured enemy combatants or promoted their torture have been put on trial by o?

"One of the things I think is very important for me to speak out on is making sure that people are treated fairly and justly because that's what we stand for, and I believe that that's a precept that's not unique to America. That's just something that should apply everywhere."

eg know that expecting favours from the countries nsa is spying on is breathtakingly bone-headed. and thinking you can paint the other guy as retrograde because they see the obvious is embarrassing. it's the prism programme, stupid. russia is reacting to us behaviour.

"There have been times where they [Russians] slip back into Cold War thinking and a Cold War mentality."

i wonder if there's something in the culture that seems to make us governments decide compulsion is more persuasive than cajolery and that hierarchy is a more effective system than society.

for myself, i am generally an evolutionary gradualist and a respecter of frontiers, fences and differences. which means i often find us government actions, which seem sometimes to issue from a pulpit, to be superior, pushy and off-putting.

being and being seen to be equal and persuading through reason rather than power are, in my view, far and away the most effective ways to align one country's ideas with another's.

Patient process.
