i wonder if there's something in the culture that seems to make us governments decide compulsion is more persuasive than cajolery and that hierarchy is a more effective system than society.

for myself, i am generally an evolutionary gradualist and a respecter of frontiers, fences and differences. which means i often find us government actions, which seem sometimes to issue from a pulpit, to be superior, pushy and off-putting.

being and being seen to be equal and persuading through reason rather than power are, in my view, far and away the most effective ways to align one country's ideas with another's.

Patient process.

ideally i think of the olympics as a festival during which everyone sets aside politics and just participates. except in an extreme instance.

do homosexual rights rise to this level?

some will argue they do.

for myself, i think the us will do best if it does its own thing and leaves others to evolve in their own time.

the us should be very careful about asserting what it perceives as its moral authority in the world.

this just provokes countries like russia into corresponding action eg the recent law to stop us adoptions of russian children after congress decided to pass laws about russians it doesn't like.
