Huma Abedin!
There is a great deal of talk around political circles about former Hillary Clinton aid Huma Abedin’s role in her husband, Anthony Weiner’s, campaign for the office of mayor of the city of New York. For those who might live out in the political wilderness, Anthony Weiner is the former New York City congressman who, a couple of years ago, got caught texting his private parts to young women while still in office. Now, we should realize here that he did not have an affair with anyone, just sent some dirty pictures over the telephone that, strangely enough, were mostly not bad enough not to be seen on national network news shows of that time. In comparison, Geraldo Rivera recently showed us his upper torso and bragged that he was still a virile man at his age, whatever that might be. You can look it up. And we still have the memories of Vladimir Putin riding his horse half naked and the stories that circulate about how Barack Obama was lucky when he first met with Putin that Putin didn’t show Obama something more “interesting” than his half naked torso that he was so proud of.
Don’t get us wrong. We are not condoning what Anthony Weiner did. And we are certainly not in his corner for continuing to do it after being found out as was revealed in New York last week. When you are in a hole and you want to climb out, stop digging. But we are astounded by the press’s reaction and conclusions that his loving and obviously hyper loyal bride is being pummeled for standing by his side during his run for mayor. If it were not for Huma Abedin, Anthony Weiner would never have been able to run for mayor in the first place. She could have left him in disgrace and taken their child to live a life without him. While the press sees a person out for some sort of crass political or public relations gain, we see a woman who has decided that she has married a man with feet of clay who is going to maintain a family life for herself and her child and is going to stand by him in his hours of need.
We would not vote for Anthony Weiner for mayor if we lived in New York but we do find how he has dealt with his issues to be a little bit fascinating. In point of fact, for much of his political life, Weiner has wanted to be the next mayor of New York and if it had not been for this scandal, he might have actually been elected mayor of the city that once saw former mayor Jimmy Walker sail away from its shores after scandal might have affected Franklin D. Roosevelt’s run for the presidency of the United States in 1932. We find it interesting that some feel that what Huma Abedin has done might affect Hillary Clinton’s ability to become president of the United States. There are those who would like to remind us of what Ms. Clinton went through with her own husband back a couple of decades ago and this Weiner/Abedin/Clinton connection gives them fodder for their political grist mill machines.
In point of fact, Hillary Clinton’s finest hour may not have been her turn as Secretary of State, but, rather, the time she spent in the fires of marital discord that tested her mettle for far greater things that may still come later. The country singer Tammy Lynette once sang “Stand by your man” and many of the American populace still appreciate women who will do that sort of thing despite what the winds of marital fortune may bring their way. There are those who think that Hillary Clinton is a godless liberal, however, like so many before her, those sacred wedding vows still mean something to them. It is so easy to walk away from distasteful things but even walking away will not usually ease the pain that one has to go through and it will not end a relationship that is bound together by what the love of the marriage has produced--children.
Perhaps it is for the new child that Hum Abedin has stayed with Anthony Weiner. Perhaps it is simply for the overwhelming love that she cannot shake for the man. Perhaps it is the same for Hillary Clinton. As a nation, we are seemingly ditching institutions right and left these days as is exampled by those who would trash our government but there is no greater institution than that of marriage and it is one of the greatest acts of faith that any woman can enter into during her lifetime. “For better or for worse,” the words have an increasing meaning as life goes on and the abstractness of them at the start is replaced by the reality of them in the end when those who have made the trek stare at each other one last time and say good by when death finally ends their time together. It is then, we think, that all the worth of all of it may finally be revealed to those who care to stay around to have this very profound experience that completes the circle that that small round ring symbolizes so well. When one looks into the well of a marriage, there are secrets and memories that accumulate that only the two can know or share and it is not the business of those outside of it to pass any sort of judgment on what goes on there or what either partner will be willing to endure for the sake of what they have made together.
