Truth is, it is very hard to inoculate one's self from thinking of M when considering Z's guilt.

But actually, Z is also owed the mercy of the court and the justice due to a defendant. His actions must be considered in isolation from the emotions surrounding their consequences. What were his circumstances? What might he have been thinking as he encountered M? What choices did he have?

This doesn't take the tragedy out of the story. No one should forget that M was someone's child, had a life which had value, was capable of love. Might have had a fine future.

It is just that a court is not the way to express this. One doesn't have to blame Z, to wish him to be punished, in order to have compassion for M.

Justice isn't a synonym for punishment.
