Planes make poor parachutes.. Without the airspeed, they stall, fall out of the sky, they were just lucky it was as low as it was or it would have slammed way harder, turned it's cargo to a mass of jelly... Since the lead pilot had 10,000 hours experience, I really don't understand why he'd let if get that far out of limits... They survived as well, and will have to testify, tack on the instrumentation, someone's head will roll.. Maybe a maintenance problem.. Won't really know for a while ...

The Asiana Airlines jet was traveling 39 miles per hour below the target speed of 158 mph just a few seconds before it crashed at San Francisco International Airport, NTSB Chairwoman Debbie Hersman told reporters Monday.

Hersman said the plane was traveling at 103 knots - or 118 mph - just three seconds before impact. It had sped up slightly to 106 knots at the time of impact, based on an initial review of flight data.
