There was an interview on the radio this morning with someone from Texas and they were commenting on some of the things that Governor Rick Perry had said in defense of his plan to shut down most all of the women's health clinics in the state which provides, in addition to normal health related services, legal abortions. Part of his argument was that the state of Texas was obligated to make sure that these clinics were being run in a safe manner, which was why one of the new requirements is that doctors at these clinics must be affiliated with a fully-accredited hospital within 30 driving miles of the facility. Take a look at a map of Texas. I think you'll see that the vast majority of Texas is already MORE than 30 miles from most any fully-accredited hospital.
But what really offended the caller was the idea that the same people who are claiming that they are only doing this to make sure that Texans can feel safe about going to one of these clinics, that they are the same people who claim that it's an unnecessary burden to impose safety regulations on any business in Texas employing 10 or less full time workers, like that fertilizer plant that blew-up and nearly wiped out the town of West, TX, or the other 200+ fertilizer plants just like it in small towns spread all across the state.
