Texas Gov. Rick Perry Wednesday called a special session of the state legislature for July 1 that will address abortion restrictions that got derailed at the last minute by a one-woman Democratic filibuster.
"Texans value life and want to protect women and the unborn. Texans want a transportation system that keeps them moving. Texans want a court system that is fair and just. We will not allow the breakdown of decorum and decency to prevent us from doing what the people of this state hired us to do," Perry said in a statement.
He had tried to get a sweeping bill restricting abortion through his legislature. But it got softened in the House, and blocked in the Senate by Democrat Wendy Davis. The Senate bill included an array of restrictions on clinics and doctors, including a ban on most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Nearly a dozen other states have passed similar restrictions, some of which are now being fought over in court.
