Biting the hand that fed 'em...
Overseas, long ago, we found ourselves outside of the Union Bargaining Unit where we'd all come from. Boston, Louisiana, Los Angeles, San francisco, Denver & New York City. As we looked over that first check, Bingo, WeCo Defense Activities Division had screwed us over in several ways, 12 ways in fact... So even though they were a US based company division, White Sands and Winston Salem, they thought they had free reign to mess with us, our families... Wrong.
Officer's Mess had a nice lobby, so we met there every evening, guys from the other islands met with us, and we in affect created our own Union Local then and there.. Didn't hurt we had a few ex-officers, stewards in the group. That was before the web, before hard wired telephone connections.. So letter writing became the game... From up top at HQ to regional VP's, Area Managers, even our 1st & 2nd level bosses that had released us to go out there... This was a case where 'trickle down' worked perfectly. It took a while, several weeks, local manager tried to resist. But final straw was we all packed up, went to the airport... Oops, they are serious! Suddenly they wanted to talk... All issues were resolved, immediately if possible, as additional housing came available, that happened, and we ended up receiving a chunk of back pay for all the other issues.. Poor old Marvin, he'd been busted.. But he handled it well, ended up a lot better relationship for all, they made a deal, stick to it, stop the petty BS the local bean counters tried to pull... A great example of why we needed Union representation everywhere, a check and balance, make sure agreed to contracts were adhered to fairly, differences negotiated as needed... Fun time, good people, successful project, eventually...
