Very same here, we were pretty lilly white in the 50s, just Henry, our shoe shine stand man, and he kept others tended to I'm told.. Nice old fellow right by the barber shop... None in HS, only a few at the local college, work nearly the same.. Well there was one, similar named, so he was the chocolate one... He had issues with his boss one day.. Same size as me, boss shouldda known better than to call him boy... next thing he knew, he was up on the wall feet danglin', his throat being the only support... It was made very clear that chocolate was never to be called boy again... No problem, just an understanding was come to..
Overseas on Kwaj, one of the guys I helped train for the maintenance side was another big guy, and like most, gentle giants, good guy, fun times..
So South Chicago was my initiation, never a problem, it was before the riots and such, '61, I think, the area I lived was Polish, but between working, school, never got to know the locals.. Twenty-five cents got you anywhere on the CTA.. used it, a lot, Gold Street, up all night, etc.. Fun times..

When I was a youngster, in my first serious job in upstate NY, I went out exploring (whoring) on a Friday evening, and ended up, half drunk, in a black neighborhood in Hudson NY. I was out of place, white in my suit and tie, when a huge black man approached saying "Hey there brother, what cha doin.". I recall because "brother' in those days was an uncommon term, used in my experience only by my father on a regular basis (Fatherhood of God, brotherhood of man stuff). Well, he hosted me around that town till Saturday afternoon. A memorable, positive experience. I have had many dealings with minorities over the years, with no negative experiences whatsoever. There were zero minorities living in my hometown growing up, although there were a few Protestants - We thought they were pretty exotic.
