CF,

"and j-t might say, everyone should have the implant because there's a risk of nuclear war if they don't."

You've traveled a piece down the road from monitoring cell phone calls to brain chips, now haven't you?

We have, for years, been warning of the chances of a nuclear terrorist attack and what might happen after it would occur. To say that there is no chance of it is akin to pissing into the wind. Part of our idea of freedom is to care deeply about those who might die horrible deaths as a result of an event like that and to express our concerns about it on boards like these. We love our freedom as much as anyone else loves theirs, however, we realize that we could lose a great deal of it if something like a nuclear strike were to occur. We have already lost our ability to simply check our baggage at the airport as we now have to go through body scans and the like. We have also lost our ability to travel to Canada or Mexico without a passport, something that we didn't used to have to have. Every event creates its own further intrusions into our lives and if they want to check my phone logs or other sorts of communications that we might do, its alright with me. I have nothing to hide!!!!!

This "freedom" thing is an interesting concept! Freedom to do what? For me it is the freedom to write on message boards and express my thoughts, opinions, and ideas. We can think of nothing else that we might do that might draw attention to ourselves! Or to put it as Rhett Butler did at the end of Gone With The Wind when he said goodbye to Scarlett O'Hara: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLnTWxpTQt4

Regards,

Joe

hi d&o,

my point is that there are other means to catch terrorists than a gigantic database of all the world's data. so the gripe you describe does not become illegitimate in the event of a successful terrorist attack.

on the basis of an argument like this or j-t's, you might demand that everyone has a brain-reading chip implant if one were available.

because if you object, boy, you have no cause to gripe in the event of an attack because you said you don't want the op.

and j-t might say, everyone should have the implant because there's a risk of nuclear war if they don't.

you can use the extreme case to justify absolutely anything you wish.

but the tradition of liberty is that you get to investigate folks who have given grounds for suspicion. free folks get protected from that.
