Don't you think it's a bit simpler to conclude that in this civil war, as with the Iraqi one, Western powers are fairly marginal.

Syria is kinda resolving into a proxy war between Iranian/Shi'a groups, including fundamentalists and terrorists, and Saudi/Sunni groups, including fundamentalists and terrorists.

It seems the Russians are giving some support to one side. And the West is giving some support to the other.

But the West is unlikely to get liberalism in Syria even if its side wins. The choice seems to be between dictatorship and Islamic traditionalism in various guises.

I wish that it were otherwise. But as yet, liberal democratic values don't seem to command a majority in the Islamic crescent.

David said 10 years back that al-Qaeda was
controlled by US,UK,Israel and Saudi Arabian
intelligence......which perfectly explains
why we find them on our side in Libya and
Syria..........the Trillions of dollars wasted
by tax payers and thousands of lives destroyed
over the west's fake 10 year war on terror......

Of course he was branded a nutcase.....

"To what extent have Britain and America been complicit? It is hard to judge. What can be said with certainty is that over the past decade the Middle East, and to some extent the Islamic world, has broken down into two armed camps. On the one side are Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States, backed by the United States and (quietly) Israel. To everyone’s enormous embarrassment, al-Qaeda is very firmly in this camp."

"Just like Tony Blair over Iraq, the Prime Minister has lost touch with reality when it comes to Syria"
