Hi Weco:

I guess I'm most concerned about the government obtaining millions or all of verizon's phone records. This indicates a 'big data' approach to analyzing telephone conversations rather than a target audience of suspected or potential evil-doers.

Same game was started in the Bushie years, only it was AT&T, this time it's Verizon.. So not really a new story... Anyone that has ever thought their telephone conversations are completely private is a fool... Call have nee monitored since the first call made, only now it's simpler. Early days there were wired connections that had to be made, under court order generally, but who knows what went on is the thousands of central offices. As electronic switching came in, local police had access, software, even if you look at the code, can hide background operations, if they don't publish documentation, you'll never know it's there.. So today, simple redirection, live feeds anywhere in the globe... Only one that is truly private are those two cans and a string.
