Hi clo,

Your post is about his friends.

I am referring to texts taken from his cell phone which are not admissible. But they suggest to me that this boy was no angel. Drugs, expulsion from school, guns, kicked out of his home by his mother etc.

The original press story was extremely misleading. It gave a sense of the defendant as a racist bully who killed a terrified, fleeing kid. The photos offered up were of an innocent-looking twelve year old Martin and a fat and thuggish-looking Zimmerman. And so nice folks who respond to those memes and those picture stories were manouevred towards outrage - in the way the media thrives on. To put it cynically, outrage sells ads.

But I see no evidence of racism (this sense was created by the networks) or of bullying (who was injured during the fight?). Zimmerman carried a weapon which he is permitted to do. The narrative that each side has presented seems to suggest that each person was surprised to run into the other having been out of sight of one another at some point. Zimmerman turns out to have looked like a pretty normal adult. Martin appears to have been a strapping teenager with a fairly tough-looking demeanour (childish innocence having passed).

I have a problem with guns because these kinds of events will happen with the law as it stands. That doesn't mean that the person who is shot is always the innocent party.

Sounds to me like there was a testosterone-fueled confrontation that ended in a fight and the use of a gun by the person who was having his head smashed.

"Slain Florida teen Trayvon Martin's cellphone texts and photos show him chatting with friends about marijuana, fighting and guns, new potential evidence shows."

Zimmerman’s lawyer apologizes for Trayvon Martin ‘fight’ video
by Joy-Ann Reid | June 3, 2013 at 2:00 PM

.....
A statement posted to Zimmerman’s legal defense website on Sunday said:

During the Tuesday, May 28th hearing, Mr. O’Mara misstated the nature of video from Trayvon Martin’s cell phone which was included in the Defendant’s 3rd Supplemental Discovery. He stated that the video showed “two buddies of his beating up a homeless guy,” when what happened was Trayvon Martin, along with a buddy, was videotaping two homeless guys fighting each other over a bike. Though it was unintentional, it is a particular concern to us because we are and have been committed to disputing misinformation in every aspect of this case, not causing it. For that, Mr. O’Mara apologizes.

Stills from the video and a description of the contents were included in a story for the Orlando Sentinel’s website Sunday, which was taken down by the site after a reporter for the paper said a web producer accidentally posted it. According to the Sentinel, O’Mara released his statement and “decided against posting the video” after readers to the Orlando Sentinel site found a cached version of the story.
