Nothing more toxic than a powerful state religion.

I kinda understand why religious folks reject unfettered cultural freedom. Religion and freedom compete over the same ground, especially when it comes to the status and treatment of women (access to education, clothing, sex etc). I can see how a group with a particular set of norms would be shocked by the expression of Western freedoms.

But of course, the religious dogmatists cannot stop themselves adopting the opposite extreme - which is control of everyone's behaviour. Islam seems to have the most extensive set of rules and so it tends to be the most obnoxious to unbelievers.

The tension seems likely to continue. Especially on the fringes of Islam and liberalism. Of which Turkey is an obvious example.

Hi Alea....

In short......

An Islamic facist goverment enforced by the
police force wanting to return Turkey back to
the Ottoman days V's the modern Ataturk secular
metropolitan areas enforced by the army.....

Yes,it's a western standard model democratic
elective system but the secular v's islamic
ideals rule.....bringing back prayer rooms
and the veil in education, banning abortions and
alcohol as well as putting almost the entire
heads of the armed services in jail.....

I had the fortune to work on some old turkish
films from the sixties....the women certainly
looked more liberal then, all wearing western style
mini skirts....flesh was certainly on show,to the
point they even had their own porn industry.....

Syria is totally different.....the vast majority of Syrians support Assad.....no major divide like
Turkey.
