The IRS admitted Friday it singled out roughly 75 nonprofit groups for extra scrutiny based on their ties to the tea party and other conservative causes.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell responded by calling for President Barack Obama to order a "transparent, government-wide review" to see if similar practices are happening elsewhere in the administration. And House Ways and Means oversight subcommittee Chairman Charles Boustany told POLITICO he will launch an "aggressive" investigation.

The IRS said the decisions to review the conservative groups were made by career employees in Ohio, but declined to say if anyone has been disciplined. "Mistakes were made initially, but they were in no way due to any political or partisan rationale," the agency said in a statement.
