I went to parochial school through the 3rd grade, until we moved to Northern Michigan where there were only public schools. Since the schools' patron saint was St. Patrick we had to wear black trousers, pale-yellow long sleeved shirts and a GREEN NECKTIE. Now this was before there really were any clip-on neckties, at least not for someone like a 6 or 7 year old, so my mother had to hand tie me and my brother's ties every morning. Anyway, she finally decided to get us bow-ties instead since you could readily find clip-on versions of them. Well this almost caused a scandal but they couldn't do much about it since the school written dress code only said a "long sleeved yellow shirt and green tie". It did not specify that the 'tie' had to be a necktie so we got away with it ;-)

When I was in sixth grade (in a parochial school) we were 'schooled' prior to summer break, that we should NOT wear sleeveless tops. Boys might see too much.
Did I ever say how much I thought these nuns were out of touch.....

Mind you, during the school year we wore navy uniforms, bow ties on the peter-pan collar of the white blouse, brown shoes & socks.

I remember a hot summer day, Mom sent us to school in summer dresses (that she made) the nuns were NOT happy!
Made my younger sister cry, that's when I was NOT happy!

Today, I'm of the mind uniforms would be helpful for school. Takes the, 'can you top this,' out of their daily concerns. Many waste too much time on what they are going to wear.
I'd give them Fridays off, for freedom of expression ;))
