Me, too, quit a few times after the Surgeon General's Report in '63... , then again in the early 70s made it stick in the later 70s I think, biggest problem was we smoked on the job, in classrooms, much less in the taverns.. That was the toughest, drinking without smoking or someone offering.. Pall Mall, Camel, too tempting... But after watching a few folks die, it wasn't worth it, tossed 'em out the window, never again... Seeing older lady friend that even smoke today, it's obvious they just aren't healthy. Only two family members smoke I know of, or at least tobacco, rather addictive types, they try, but..
It was part of life, the tobacco lobby pushes, even gave 'em away to the military, a carton at the PX was a buck or two... I remember the little 4 packs they passed out, get you hooked, make their numbers, it's a sick business, living off the misery of others.. And we all foot the bill for all the health issues... Gasping for air isn't a nice way to go out.. Losing you jaw from chewing, mot a pretty sight... Losing your voicebox, not so good either.. Minimum the leathery, wrinkled skin, the smoker's breath. no so nice...
Education, good education for all could help solve, maybe stop the drinking, smoking, sure worth the effort...
Out here we're seeing more anti smoking ads lately... Some pretty gruesome... But real world...
