If you read the entire item that Clo posted, you would have seen that it appears that he already suspected that he was approaching or may have already exceeded some 'limit' since he seems to have sought help on multiple occasions before he finally 'snapped'. The warning flags were there for others to read...

Granted, I'm not familiar with how a military tribunal works (I assume this was not a civilian trial) but couldn't he have plead not guilty by reason of insanity?
