Musial's most remarkable statistic is the one outside his control, 6.8% of those voting did not put him in the HoF at the first opportunity/first ballot. Sure, 93.2 is a sound first round showing, but who are the 6.8%?

The combination of adequate power (475 HRs), batting average (.331 career), and OBP (.417 career) coupled with the fact that he was brought into professional baseball as .. a pitcher ... indicates Mr. Musial had a unique knack for things like bats, balls, and gloves.

And yes, compared to his peer group, a sober decent chap.

I was told a story, that I will no doubt get very wrong, but it went something like this ...

Musial came to the plate, a rookie was catcher, ...

first pitch, ball, outside.

second pitch, ball inside.

Third pitch called ball (high) and the catcher grumbles to the ump ... "that was a strike!" No response from the ump.

Forth pitch Stan belts out of the park.

Ump pulls out his brush to dust off the plate and says to the catcher "Son, Mr. Musial will let you know when it is a strike."
