In this country in order to collect your deceased partners social security & benefits you must be 'married.'
A 'civil union' doesn't qualify.

that means it would make no difference from a tax viewpoint if you are married or unmarried.

then i suppose the government would be responsible for any law surrounding civil unions. and what we call marriage would be an institution arranged by religions and secular groups for the recognition of people that love one another and want to express it in some formal fashion.
