hi clo,

i agree that marriage was once the way folks had children.

but nowadays, children issue forth from all sorts of arrangements.

i don't see why we don't tie the advantages to parents rather than to folks who have entered a terminable contract.

by the way, if married individuals last longer, that may be good for them but that is something different from a public good. a public good offers a benefit to society as opposed to individuals.

Hi Cactus Flower,

Back in the 'old days' marriage was the only 'respectable' way to have children. And having children/workers of tomorrow, deserved advantages.

Being 'married' does provide a public good, usually folks live a longer & happier life, unless they kill each other ;))

Our tax base has different rates for singles, married, married with 'dependents', married & filing separate, etc.

As an aside, our Pope Francis, prior to his new role, condemned priests in his country for NOT baptizing children born out of wedlock.
