hi doma,
some call it balls. some call it idiocy!!
but i see opposing forces in every direction i look.
the theory isn't confined to physics. it applies to everything that exists in the universe. evolution. the way we think. property rights. the common good. the patterns of chaos. sub-atomic particles. mathematics. economics. etc.
the comfort i have is that the theory seems to conform with the things i have observed.
when i say things like "unique principles are harmful in their pure form- all virtues are compounds (philosophy)" or "security and freedom need to be balanced in a trust ecosystem (technology)" or "the best prescriptions in economics depend upon the environment (social science)", or "the us must expect terrorism as the corollary of invading iraq (politics)", or that "nature is characterised by speciation and extinction (evolution)", or that "the fixed nature of the constitution is its profound flaw because it disqualifies adaptation (law)", or "love is insufficient, we must also be a bit selfish (personal counselling!)", i am expressing my theory.
most times it coincides with our existing understanding. but where there are competing philosophies, i find myself agreeing with the model that encompasses opposing forces.
where i see folks insisting they have access to a profound truth in politics (eg libertarianism, communism) or in law (strict constructionism) that makes change impossible, then i can predict the failure of such a system with conviction.
and where prediction comes into play, i depend upon the theory to provide the shape of my expectations. so, if there's such a thing as gravity (even if like you suggest, it is merely a form of electricity) then the alea theory would suppose there is a force which we might call anti-gravity - being in this case a force which pushes objects apart (and which i suppose is ingrained in the scope and character of space rather than of matter). etc
this is why the dynamic system called science is appealing to me. and the adaptive quality of the common law. and suchlike. i think we do best when we submit to the necessity of change. the swirling character of the forces in our universe make this unavoidable.
