We made it home a day early. It only took 3 days to clean out the house and haul away the junk. We managed to sell some of the stuff and we did bring back my wife's grandmother's Singer sewing machine (treadle powered). There are only a couple of things that need replacing and I'm going to try to refinish and restore it. While it is an antique, they're not worth a whole lot since Singer built literally millions of these machines.
The new GMC Terrain worked great and was everything we expected it to be with the possible exception that it could be a bit quicker when you accelerate (it's only the 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engine). Note that I did drive it all the way in the 'Eco' mode so perhaps that had some effect. Now it did handle the hills, but going up and down while in cruise control with no problems (the 6-speed transmission felt really smooth). We drove just over 2400 miles and got about 27.2 mpg overall (not bad considering all the mountains that we had to drive through going up the I-5 to Weed and then up through the middle of Oregon on US-97). I suspect that if it had been a flat drive that we'd have gotten closer to 30 mpg. The onboard computer has a feature where it records the average mpg for the last 50 miles as well as indicating the BEST 50 miles that you've driven since you last reset the trip computer. Our best 50 miles was 41.9 mpg, but that was coming down from Mount Shasta into Redding, so that's not very representative but it was fun seeing the numbers creep up to the 40+ level.
And I have to say having the Sirius/XM radio was great and when we got tired of that I had my old iPod Touch down in the bottom of the center consul hooked to the USB port and controlled on the touch-screen.
All in all, it was a good trip even if we did bust our butts to get everything done in 3 days.
