Report: Escort lied about Robert Menendez

A woman who alleged that Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) traded her money for sex now says that she was paid to make that claim, but has never encountered the lawmaker before, according to a new report.
The Washington Post reported on Monday afternoon that a female escort, who appeared in a video leveling those charges against Menendez, has told Dominican Republic police that she “has never met or seen” Menendez before. The Post cited court documents and two sources.

The allegations concerning Menendez took off after the conservative website the Daily Caller posted the video, which featured two women — including the woman in the Post’s piece — who claimed that the senator paid them for sex, the story said.
The Monday report said that now, one of the escorts says she was approached by a lawyer, and she was offered compensation in exchange for her reading from a script, and she said in an affidavit that she was “surreptitiously videotaped,” the report said. The woman named one lawyer, and he named a second lawyer, the report said. The first lawyer said the second man provided the script and gave him money to pick women to participate in the scheme according to affidavits, the report said.
“Dr. Melgen is pleased that authorities in the Dominican Republic are investigating the individuals behind this campaign of lies,” Melgen’s attorney, Kirk Ogrosky, said in a statement sent to POLITICO. “Dr. Melgen is hopeful that the appropriate authorities will identify and prosecute the people who are responsible. As he has maintained from day one, Dr. Melgen has been cooperating with authorities in every way possible and he denies any wrongdoing.”
