N.Y. poll: 65 percent back gun law

By KATIE GLUECK | 2/4/13 11:45 AM EST

The legislation -- the toughest in the country -- includes a ban on some military-style weapons.

Most New Yorkers support a stringent new state law that tackles gun control, a poll out Monday showed.
According to a survey from Siena Research Institute, 65 percent of those polled back the measure, which was passed last month in the wake of the December shooting massacre in Newtown, Conn. Thirty percent are opposed.

Support for the initiative, which was spearheaded by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, broke down along party lines: Democrats support the policy 82 percent to 12 percent who oppose it, while Republicans oppose it 63 percent to 33 percent.

The legislation, the toughest in the country, took steps including banning certain kinds of military-style weapons, reducing the ammunition quantities weapons can hold and requiring background checks to purchase bullets.

Cuomo, a possible 2016 presidential contender, received favorable-unfavorable ratings of 67 percent to 29 percent, which dipped slightly from last month’s poll, where his ratings clocked in at 71 percent to 24 percent.

Last week, a poll from Quinnipiac University found that Cuomo’s favorability figures dropped sharply in the wake of the gun legislation: from a 74-13 percent approval rating in December, to a 59-28 percent favorability score in January.

The Siena survey of 1,154 New York state voters was conducted Jan. 27-31 and has a margin of error of plus orminus 3.7 percent.
