The Senate this evening approved the $50.5 billion aid package to help Northeastern states recover from Superstorm Sandy, sending it to the White House for President Barack Obama's signature. The vote was 62-36, narrowly meeting the required 60-vote threshold.
Earlier, senators rejected, 35-62, an amendment from Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and supported by tea party and anti-tax groups that would impose across-the-board cuts to offset the new spending.
