CF,

My only comment here is that in order to drive a car in the United States, it must be registered and tagged and the driver must have a license! And, also, when a car is purchased, there is usually a heavy tax on its sale.

None of those things occur with guns. We do have a requirement in the state of Illinois that one must acquire a gun owners permit, but, many own guns who do not possess one of those.

The gun lobby is heavily against registering guns or their owners because they feel that would aid the state whne it begins the confiscation of weapons, its chief reason for all things gun!

Regards,

Joe

Hi D&O,

Where I live, talking on cell phones while driving is banned.

The general principle I follow is this. If something causes harm to others, (or may cause harm to some high level of frequency) it is legitimate to regulate it.

You mention driving. The ability to drive a car in the US is a privilege rather than a right.

The same should be true of guns if people wish to lower the frequency of gun violence.

The US has the highest population of gun owners in the world. It has gun violence rates consistent with countries in which the rule of law is tenuous. These two things are clearly connected, even if other factors are also in play.

There is no middle ground. The choice is between continuing with a violent model. Or changing it.

Of course, no one is going to protect American children. Killing ducks is more important.

Not sure where you get the idea that restricting access to guns doesn't work. Look at ANY other industrialised country.
