Hi D&O,

You pretty much always consider yourself to be in the middle, mate! I see you as a guy with consistent right of centre sympathies. Sorry.

But at least you aren't one of the wingnuts. So for a rightie, you are a leftie. But still a rightie.

Re guns - I am only interested in what works. What works is less ownership. This much is absolutely clear. Just look around at the world. The US has the problem. It also has the guns and the second amendment.

So there is no zone of hand-wringing and not knowing what to do. Restricting gun ownership works very well.

I assume you cast a shadow of doubt over what is obvious for some reason of your own. Not sure why. You want to hunt ducks, perhaps?

So the question is how do you get from A to B? How do you end up with far fewer guns?

Sure, it will take a long time. That is no reason not to begin.

If you don't begin, you have the blood of future massacres on your hands. Not you personally. But generally, the status quo is deadly.

Gun ownership is completely unlike drugs. First, because guns are not an addictive drug. Second, because the large manufacturers are in the US. The loss of the US market will decimate the industry.

So you initiate buy back programmes. You create no gun zones. You employ the police to search the houses and cars of suspects of other crimes and remove any guns discovered. You create restrictive licensing structures. You put taxes on ownership. etc.

Essentially, you create incentives and pressures to limit ownership. So that only necessary ownership is permitted. Over 20 years, gun violence will reduce. It's fairly straight forward.

You get rid of the second amendment. Where gun ownership is a privilege, the problem dissipates.
