Hi D&O,

You pretty much always consider yourself to be in the middle, mate! I see you as a guy with consistent right of centre sympathies. Sorry.

But at least you aren't one of the wingnuts. So for a rightie, you are a leftie. But still a rightie.

Re guns - I am only interested in what works. What works is less ownership. This much is absolutely clear. Just look around at the world. The US has the problem. It also has the guns and the second amendment.

So there is no zone of hand-wringing and not knowing what to do. Restricting gun ownership works very well.

I assume you cast a shadow of doubt over what is obvious for some reason of your own. Not sure why. You want to hunt ducks, perhaps?

So the question is how do you get from A to B? How do you end up with far fewer guns?

Sure, it will take a long time. That is no reason not to begin.

If you don't begin, you have the blood of future massacres on your hands. Not you personally. But generally, the status quo is deadly.

Gun ownership is completely unlike drugs. First, because guns are not an addictive drug. Second, because the large manufacturers are in the US. The loss of the US market will decimate the industry.

So you initiate buy back programmes. You create no gun zones. You employ the police to search the houses and cars of suspects of other crimes and remove any guns discovered. You create restrictive licensing structures. You put taxes on ownership. etc.

Essentially, you create incentives and pressures to limit ownership. So that only necessary ownership is permitted. Over 20 years, gun violence will reduce. It's fairly straight forward.

You get rid of the second amendment. Where gun ownership is a privilege, the problem dissipates.

Not sure where you get the idea that restricting access to guns doesn't work.

I don't think I said with any certainty that it doesn't work....I said I don't THINK it will work any better than restricting drugs does.

Why do I think that? Probably because there are hundreds of millions (or billions?) of guns out there already. And bad folks that want guns will pay about as much attention to the new rules as do the ones that want cocaine.

I do think background checks and bans will eliminate some gun deaths. Sure. (Note the think word again, I don't claim to KNOW much of anything in this discussion.) I don't think it will come even close to eliminating them. Or even halving them. At least not in our lifetimes. Or in this country that's already full of guns. And plenty of bad folks and sick folks.

Might come closer with a ban on the ammunition. But again, I doubt seriously the bad guys will have a lot more trouble getting it across the border than they do with the cocaine and such. Seize tons of it, while tons more finds its way to the illegal customer.

Ban it all, but I still ain't going to walk around in a certain part of town. Day or night.

Like I said, I'm in the middle. I don't claim to know what to do. I think some additional restrictions have merit. I don't think heavy bans will accomplish much, at least in our lifetimes. But you say there is no middle ground, so I guess I'm delusional. And here I was pretty sure I wasn't in either extreme corner.

Go on with your discussions. I said originally I probably shouldn't have interjected and don't normally comment on gun control. I am shocked to learn, though, that I am not in some middle position between those that want to ban things and those that want access to anything and everything.

Later
