Hi D&O, Where I live, talking on cell phones while driving is banned. The general principle I follow is this. If something causes harm to others, (or may cause harm to some high level of frequency) it is legitimate to regulate it. You mention driving. The ability to drive a car in the US is a privilege rather than a right. The same should be true of guns if people wish to lower the frequency of gun violence. The US has the highest population of gun owners in the world. It has gun violence rates consistent with countries in which the rule of law is tenuous. These two things are clearly connected, even if other factors are also in play. There is no middle ground. The choice is between continuing with a violent model. Or changing it. Of course, no one is going to protect American children. Killing ducks is more important. Not sure where you get the idea that restricting access to guns doesn't work. Look at ANY other industrialised country.
