Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is lifting the ban on women serving in combat, The Associated Press reported, "opening hundreds of thousands of front-line positions and potentially elite commando jobs after more than a decade at war." The AP said Panetta's order gives the military services until 2016 to "seek special exceptions" if commanders think some positions should remain closed to women.
