When I was in school back in Michigan we had gun safety classes but we didn't do any actual shooting, that was something your dad (or mom) had to teach you. Note that the primary purpose of the class was so that you could qualify to get a deer hunting license when you turned 14. BTW, I got my first gun, a 22 rifle, for my 9th birthday, and where I went to college, we had gun lockers in the dorm.

...it ought not be mandatory. Maybe an option to be considered. When I was in high school, we had a school rifle team. Never had an accident. Never had a shooting of any kind. Didn't have as much school violence either.
