Of course if he runs for the Oval, he wouldn't get the early primary votes from the lunatic fringe in his party.

January 23, 2013 - New Jersey Voters Back Christie's Rap On GOP 5-1, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Voters Tell Lautenberg To Step Aside

Gov. Christopher Christie was right to criticize Congressional Republicans for delaying a vote on Hurricane Sandy relief, New Jersey voters say 79 - 15 percent, including 70 - 22 percent among Republicans, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Voters approve 74 - 21 percent of the job Gov. Christie is doing, his highest job score ever and matching New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo as having the highest job approval of any governor in the states surveyed by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.

Christie's approval is 93 - 4 percent among Republicans, 56 - 37 percent among Democrats and 78 - 18 percent among independent voters. Men approve 79 - 18 percent while women approve 69 - 24 percent.

The governor deserves reelection, voters say 68 - 24 percent, with Democrats at 47 - 43 percent. Christie leads possible Democratic challengers by margins of 2-1 or higher:
59 - 30 percent over State Sen. Richard Codey;
63 - 22 percent over State Sen. Barbara Buono;
61 - 25 percent over State Senate President Stephen Sweeney.
In these hypothetical matchups, Christie takes 30 to 35 percent of the Democratic vote.

"'Give 'em hell, Chris!' New Jersey voters say about Gov. Christopher Christie's attack on House Speaker John Boehner and House Republicans when they delayed the vote on Superstorm Sandy relief," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"Overwhelming support for their Jersey Guy Gov from every group in every corner of the state translates into a sky-high approval rating matched only by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. 2016 - here we come."

"First, of course, Gov. Christie has to get reelected this year. Right now, it doesn't look like a problem," Carroll added.

"The Democratic establishment is starting to line up behind State Sen. Barbara Buono, but she's the weakest of the three top Democrats against Christie. She trails Sen. Richard Codey almost 3-1 in the primary. She's neck and neck with State Senate President Stephen Sweeney."

Codey leads the Democratic primary pack with 28 percent, with Buono and Sweeney at 10 percent each. Early in the election cycle, 43 percent of Democrats are undecided.
