The Patriots!
Today is the second anniversary of the shooting in front of a grocery store in Tucson, Arizona that took the lives of several people including a young girl named Christina Taylor Green and left who is now former congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s mostly disabled from a shot to the head! This morning, former general Stanley McChrystal appeared on the MSNBC program Morning Joe to state that the weapons of war that he and other members of the military carried for much of their careers were much like the assault weapons that have been used in so many of the shootings that have plagued the United States. McChrystal stated that these weapons fired a substantial bullet at three thousand feet per second that literally tore the bodies of those struck by them to pieces. And, last night, on CNN’s Piers Morgan’s interview show, Morgan interviewed a very radical radio talk show host who has mounted a White House petition drive to get Morgan deported because of his views on the second amendment and on the gun issue. Piers Morgan is from Great Britain and he pointed out that after a massacre similar to the one in Newtown, Connecticut that killed twenty six children that had occurred in Scotland a number of years ago that resulted in massive gun control legislation being passed in that nation, that Great Britain had only thirty five gun murders last year. The radio host screamed at Morgan uncontrollably on the air and told him that if they tried to take Americans guns away there would, in effect, be a second American revolution.
We have some news! That second American revolution may already be here! Various sources say that around 4,435 people died in battle during the American revolution while we are killing over twelve thousand in this nation every year with our guns! This is not a revolution, it is more like a holocaust!
We remember being out in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia a number of years ago on one of our annual Christmas visits where we learned that the American revolution came to Virginia partially because the British king”s royal governor fled the colony after taking all of the guns out of the armory located in a brick building in the middle of colonial Williamsburg. No one had tried to disarm the populous themselves, just take the weapons away that the local militia would have used if they had been called up for a service such as the defense of the colony that might have occurred during the French and Indian War that had concluded some dozen years before the revolutionary war began.
We have come a long way in this nation since 1775 but no one has ever seriously thought about taking weapons necessary for home defense away from the American public. Every time the gun control issue is brought up, the right points out that guns are not about hunting but, apparently, about keeping the people armed against the intrusions of a government that might try to take some of their precious rights away. The question that we might wish to bring up on this anniversary is who is watching out for the rights of those such as Christina Taylor Green who died out on that side walk in Tucson in front of that grocery store on that Saturday morning when she came to see her congressperson and exercise her rights as a citizen to engage in the age old right to discourse with those who would be representing her . Those rights were taken away by an enraged and probably insane gunman who simply came to kill human beings that he had no idea that he would kill before he gave them such a special identity by the acts that he committed that morning in this democracy. Christina Taylor Green was a long way from being old enough to vote, however, she was certainly old enough to die!
It is interesting to note that Christina Taylor Green’s mother is now appearing in a stark public service ad sponsored by an anti gun organization in which she holds a picture of her beautiful daughter in which she simply asks when something is going to be done about the gun situation in this country. And, on a specific date to come soon about that we will not publicize, the gun lobby in this nation is asking for gun abiding citizens to physically flood the nation on that date in visible support and defense of the right to keep and bear arms.
You might have noticed in the preceding paragraph that we used the term “gun abiding citizen” instead of law abiding citizen because that is exactly what these people are. Laws mean little to people who own a gun and carry it in a concealed way. Laws are just a convenience to them. If the law is around that is alright. If it isn’t, that is alright just as well. Just like the killer of Trayvon Martin down in Florida-George Zimmerman-these people take the law into their own hands and they kill those whom they do not like on any pretense, including that, that they drum up themselves in order to do the things that they so want to do. Where they walk and where they stand they are the law and there is no due process involved in it at all!
And, somewhere in a shack, or a tunnel complex, or a combination of both, there are those who await an intrusive government to come and try to take their guns away, and the thousands of rounds of ammunition that these patriots own that they bought legally probably on the internet. And, many of these rounds are armor piercing bullets that can easily go through any time of bullet proof vest that a police officer might wear to try to preserve their lives. Out in Los Angeles Country last week the police held a weapons buy back program that yielded among other things, two rockets propelled grenade launchers that looked eerily similar to the army bazookas of old.
God only knows just how many weapons of various kinds there are floating around inside of the United States of America as we speak!
And, since the tragedy in Newtown, gun shows and gun stores cannot keep up with the number of people flooding into them to buy assault weapons before the ban that they so fear is put in place. And, we remember faintly that John F. Kennedy was shot to death by a cheap rifle that was probably purchased out of a newspaper ad.
We are faintly curious about all of those patriots who are members of some kind of club, or cult, who are meeting or hiding out in some red state somewhere who have amassed all of these powerful weapons to keep a government at bay that their rights under the second amendment provide for them to do. And, we have but one question for all of them: What are you going to do when the government and that bill of rights are gone from this world? Who will protect your rights then? Your guns? There are always greater or lesser people than yourselves, and, will you be strong enough to survive against them when they come for you? Or, will they pry your weapon out of your cold dead hand when they are done?
In reality, all of these good citizens who are protecting themselves against this intrusive government have become what they most fear! They have become a force unto themselves that threatened the rights of so many good and gentle people who would never have a gun in their homes. It has been said that only thirty two percent of the American citizenry owns a gun. Where they got that statistic we have no idea. But, if it is true then a strong minority is dictating to the majority in this nation and threatening the very life liberty and the pursuit of happiness that people like Christina Taylor Green or the twenty young souls in Newtown will never ever get to enjoy!
Every time that we have another mass murder in this nation and do nothing about it, we further desensitize ourselves as a body politic and drive ourselves further from the high ideals that the founders set out in the document that most everyone seems to want to espouse. There are those in this nation who make a fabulous living everyday destroying the trust that generations sacrificed so much to develop between its citizens and its government. They appear on the radio and they inhabit the corporations that sell the tools of our eventual destruction! And, from the looks of things Christina Taylor Green and the twenty who died in Newtown and all of the others who have been taken by gun violence may have been the lucky ones. They died quick deaths and were spared the slow death that so many see happening to a democracy that deserved far better than what it has been given. This democracy was set up to protect minority rights above all other things and, now, it is a minority that is destroying the vehicle that provides the protection for all!
And, they call themselves patriots!
