Chuck Hagel Allegedly Balked At Funding For Israeli USO Port: 'Let The Jews Pay For It'

Former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel, a possible nominee to become President Barack Obama’s next Secretary of Defense, has recently fallen out of favor with many of his former Republican colleagues. Since his name was mentioned in connection with a possible nomination, several statements have come to light in which Hagel cast aspersions on America’s relationship with the state of Israeli in questionably anti-Semitic terms. On Thursday, another statement has been uncovered which could further frustrate Hagel’s aspirations to become the next Secretary of Defense.
When Hagel served as the president and CEO of the World USO from 1987 to 1990, he expressed deep opposition to the popular USO center in the Israeli city of Haifa. According to a report in the Washington Free Beacon, Hagel allegedly told Jewish leaders lobbying him to keep the post open, “let the Jews pay for it.”
