i think they have the wrong perps.
it was a hoax perpetrated by the press on the paranoid to fill column inches.
i doubt more than a few hundred people worldwide believed the story. but millions follow the story astonished that there are people dull enough to believe in it.
it's like the annual story on fox news about the war on christmas. there is no war but it sure draws outrage, fills a slot and sells advertising.
about 99% of the press delights in base human instincts and seeks to feed people's insatiable appetite for more stories about them. lust. fear. outrage. shame etc. it's where the big money is.
