Paris is an easy city to find you way around even without a compass, although a good street map helps. After all, the major 'landmarks' are always easy to spot since they tend to stand much higher than the vast majority of buildings in the main part of the city (not true in the more modern districts but certainly for the parts of the city visited by most tourists).

I took my nuvi 670 to Paris, pre-iPhone, it was useless... we were walking or using the subways, pointless to even try.. I held it out the hotel window, it eventually figured out where we were, but useless indoors or in the subways.. it stayed in the room, packed away... At the time, as we'd learned on other escapades, a compass was pretty vital, along with the map... Easy to get totally turned around under gray skies... Sometimes it led to very long walks to get back where we wanted to be.. No cabs, etc.. Cabbies all over depend on GPS now, next camera body update will have GPS in it.. there's add-ons, but clunky..
