What's remarkable to me is the GOP continues to believe they didn't lose the election. John Boehner's counter-offer yesterday in the "cliff" talks was no different than what the GOP has been offering for years - no higher taxes on the wealthy, amorphous tax deductions, and cuts in Medicare and other programs most people depend on. Yet the Democratic caucus in the Senate now has 55 members (up from 53 before Election Day); Republicans have 8 fewer seats in the House than before the election; President Obama won reelection by a popular vote margin of more than 4 million, which is a million more than George W. Bush when he was reelected; and he was elected with an electoral college majority of 332 to Romney's 206, again larger than Bush's electoral majority over Kerry (286 to 251). So why oh why is the GOP still in denial? Their philosophy was repudiated by most Americans. And the polls show a majority -- over 60 percent -- want taxes raised on the rich. If Boehner's and Mitch McConnell's GOP fails to understand what happened in the election, they'll be routed in 2014, and become a minority party for a generation.
