Senator Manchin Pushes For Troops To Come Home
MetroNews
Statewide

U.S. Senator Joe Manchin was on the U.S. Senate floor Thursday urging the President as well as the rest of the Senate to end the war in Afghanistan.

"After more than ten years, more than 1,900 American lives and more than $500 billion, it is time to bring our warriors home to a heroes welcome," said Senator Manchin.

His time on the Senate floor was part of him showing his support for the passing of a bipartisan Sense of the Senate amendment that aimed at bringing our soldiers home.

Manchin said he supported the amendment not only because it backs the Presidents current plan to end combat operations in Afghanistan by the end of 2014 but also because it called for a quicker transition of security operations from U.S. forces to Afghan forces.

Manchin was an original cosponsor of the amendment which was also sponsored by Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley.

Manchin preferred troops to be pulled out sooner than by the end of 2014 and he believed with this amendment that could happen.

"Instead of the end of 2014, the amendment urges the transition to take place in the summer of 2013, this coming year," said Manchin. "That hopefully will bring a quicker end to the U.S. involvement in combat in Afghanistan."

Manchin's fight in Washington D.C. paid off as the amendment passed by a Senate vote of 62-33.

Manchin said it's time for a change.

"It's time to focus our resources on building America, not on rebuilding Afghanistan," said Manchin. "It is time to come home to rebuild America."

U.S. forces have been in Afghanistan since October 7, 2001.

ISLAMABAD (AP) — The Afghan foreign minister pressed Pakistan on Friday to free more Taliban detainees in Islamabad's custody in a bid to help coax the militant group into peace negotiations to end the 11-year-old war in Afghanistan, officials said.
