I'm a fan of Hagel.

Chuck Hagel being vetted by Obama administration
Posted by Rachel Weiner on November 28, 2012 at 5:33 pm

Former Nebraska Republican senator Chuck Hagel is being vetted for a possible top national security post in the Obama administration, The Cable reports.

Hagel is currently a professor at Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service.
Since leaving office in 2008 Hagel has been a harsh critic of his own party, saying Republicans are too intolerant and have moved too far to the right. In the Nebraska Senate race this past cycle, he backed Democrat Bob Kerrey.

Even before his retirement, Hagel enjoyed a close relationship with the future president. His wife endorsed Obama over Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) that year, and Hagel traveled to Iraq with the Democratic senator. He was one of the strongest critics of the Bush administration’s conduct of the war in Iraq.

There were rumors that Hagel would be tapped for a role in the last administration — possibly even as Obama’s running mate. He has made no secret of his interest in an administration job and has been mentioned in the past as a possible director of national intelligence or defense secretary.
