Yes, I also use FileMaker Pro for my coin collection.

Not sure what the original version was which I started on 2001, but I'm currently running FileMaker Pro 12 Advanced. And yes, I've never had any problems upgrading from those older versions, first on a series of PowerPC-based Mac's and now on my current Intel-based Mac Pro 'tower'.

The only duplicate images are the original downloads which I leave in iPhoto, which I use as my common 'gateway'. I don't really use iPhoto for anything other than an 'interface' however now that my latest DSLR (Sony A65) geo-tags the images using it's built-in GPS system I might use it to at least verify the venues the shots were taken at so that my manual data records are accurate with respect to where the images were taken. Of course that geographic data is retained by the image file even if they're archived outside of any smart filing application, just not easily leveraged.

Ahhh, FileMaker, once Apple/Claris, then spun off on their own now.. I used to keep up a complete home inventory, tools, toys, collections, but I got too busy, let it slide, but had all the ISBNs of all my books, tool serial numbers, lots of fun setting it up.. FileMaker is great... I'm a few versions back, but it's all compatible, even with early projects... I'm at Version 9, I think I had to upgrade once we went to Intel ships...

But photos, I keep the originals, some on DVDs, most on the HD in topical folders, then I use iPhoto Buddy to organize 30 or so Libraries, topical, so I can almost find what I need, but iPhoto is handiest for sharing, Facebook, emails for smaller amounts.. But all events are up online, originally Ofoto then Kodak took over.. When Kodak bailed they sent all photos over to Shutterfly, clear back to my earliest digitals, or scans.. Italy, 2001 I think is the earliest.. Terabytes up there, so another form of backup... Some are on other services, Flickr, maybe others as I tried 'em out.. Still figuring Shutterfly out, I started putting contacts for sharing up on their site, but I got word they were sending spam out, pushing folks to sign up, so I deleted all but my own email, then I distribute separately, so that avoids it all... It's hard to match how well Kodak worked, sorry to see them fold it up..

Anyway, all the archives, including the copies in iPhoto are indexed in Picasa, so a lot of duplicates show up, but for a collage, just pick whatever ones are wanted, hit a button, bingo...
