...it's a tragedy and it can happen in any family. I have a daughter in law with the same problem. There was a divorce and we just haven't seen or heard from her in years. Once in a blue moon we get a phone call from some bail bondsman or distant police department wanting to know if we know how to get in touch with her.

Resigned,.... Bipolar...

We've dealt with our bipolar DIL for years now, meds, if sorted out. they can deal with it, but only work a few years apparently, then a re-evaluation, rest, it's been messy, suicidal, to riding high... Got her degree, working on her Master, but we don't think she can keep it together that long.. And of course, poor or no medical insurance, at least now a basic coverage, but there's no decent mental health facility in this county, so they've checked her into another county that manages to skirt the rules, but I'm still amazed my son's company has contended with his absenteeism, but they stepped in covered expenses over and above insurance, so some hope...

'Tis not a simple world... brain maladies an extremely complex issue, worse when the patient is smart, very smart, sometimes knows more than those treating them, but objectivity is lost along the way...
