yes - this is quite amusing but even more unlikely than the notion of states seceding!!
poor old austin in the midst of that sea of red.
my suggestion is four different countries, with alaska and hawaii making up their own minds what they want to do.
west coast, north east, deep south and mid-west.
one or two states would end up in a country they didn't necessarily choose, but these countries would need to be made up of contiguous states. so folks who couldn't bear this would have to move.
so then the folks in the deep south and mid-west could exclude science, exchange gold coins for currency, teach religion, live in anarchy and without taxes, hunt without restriction, prepare for the end times, smoke two packs a day, make moonshine, watch nascar, play country music, invade the middle east, torture foreigners and generally pollute their environment.
and the folks on the west coast and in the north east can have a healthcare public option, an economy with regulations, a safety net, fiat currency, science education, arugala, a smaller military, legalised weed, lower incarceration rates and reduced carbon emissions.
