this is really just rupert murdoch doing the same thing to the us television news medium that he did to tabloid print journalism in the uk.
he doesn't have a passive approach to news. he drives sales by stirring base passions: outrage, frustration, envy, lust, pride, us and them. he is content to have things more-or-less concocted from the ground up so long as they whip up strong emotions. strong emotions sell ads.
it's a commercial decision. whole countries are manipulated in order to drive news corp's bottom line.
finally, the uk has picked his lock. hopefully the us will follow suit.
