I wasn't a doggie, but rather a human in a little not-sea-worthy-skin of a kayack ... and they would cruise straight at me ... and then go under .... and then surface somewhere with a big blow.
I assumed they weren't going to eat me, but the choice was entirely theirs.
I will never never forget it. This little thingy of a boat I was in (not a sea kayack, not rudder, no structure) put my face about 2 or three feet from the water .. no vision.
Just the occasional tall fin, straight at you.
I did what sensible people would do. I paused, reached into the boat, and found some whiskey.
And I paddled. Oh, and I talked. I wanted to seem different than a seal, I used the Littany against Fear of the Bene Gesserit (I kid you not).
No kidding, I just muttered this to ORCAs
I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.
It worked.
PRince William Sound Alaska, I don't even think I had a bloody life vest.
