the one i liked was robert gates so i suppose he is the model for the defense secretary i am thinking about. powell might be a good choice to replace hillary clinton.

I see SoD as the civilian interface between the executive, the legislative and the military with war planning starting with the chiefs. There are cases where SoD takes over war plan, something that often doesn't go too well (Rumsfeld e.g.). I don't think Panetta thinks of himself as some great military mind, while Rumsfeld seemed to think he was Rommel reincarnated. I'm curious if Powell is available for civil service again. Kerry for anything would be interesting, perhaps the MA gov would go for the seat?
