Dig,

The things that the Atlantic coucil recommends range from the sublime to the ridiculous. Raising awareness for human rights abuses is ridiculous. The Iranians are already possibly the greatest current sponsor of state terrorism in the world so they could care less what the world thinks of their human rights violations. Perhaps the greatest and most ridiculous item on your list is to convince Israel to act against their own best interests. And we have this question for you: What does the international community and the United States do the morning after we learn that Iran has just exploded a few nuclear devices inside of Israeli territory, possibly killing millions?

These are not games and though, given enough time, some of the Council's suggestions might bear some fruit, we simply do not have the time. Once the Iranians get that bomb it is a whole new ball game! What the Coucil says that we might destroy the chances for reform inside of Iran for another generation must be balanced against the chances of destroying Israel for all the coming generations.

IOVHO,

Regards,

Joe

To say that "God exists" is the greatest understatement ever made across space and time.

Your assertions may be correct, but FWIW the Atlantic Council, Chaired by Chuck Hagel had this to say in March 2012:

http://www.acus.org/files/publication_pdfs/403/031912_ACUS_IranInternal.PDF

• Provide free satellite access to the Internet for the
Iranian population.
• Give more training to civil society actors through
web-based programs.
• Increase access for Iranian students to education in
the United States.
• Urge Iranian exiles to work together to try to influence
developments in Iran rather than wasting their energies
attacking each other.
• Negotiate seriously with the Iranian government over the
nuclear question so that the onus for sanctions falls
more on the regime than on the international community.
• Raise awareness of human rights abuses and seek to
shame Iran for its wanton arrests and high rate of
executions.
• Stop threatening to attack Iran, and convince Israel that
starting a conflict with Iran will only push the Islamic
Republic to develop nuclear weapons while destroying
the chances for political reform for another generation.
