Derangement
(A post this morning over at Motley. Sad mess that the deranged one thinks they have all the answers...)
Well that is what it seemed to me yesterday.
Now first realize that I live in a very hard right conservative state, Idaho, where 40+ years of Republican/Plutocratic PR/Propaganda has truly worked its magic leaving all too many confused and angry folks.
Now yesterday I was sitting down outside to a cinnamon latte and a bagel with cream cheese at the local coffee shop when the person at the next table asked what I was reading. It was the exciting "Fundamental concepts for the Software Quality Engineer", a tome that all should read .
Well my answer led to the throw away comment that "at least a few things are still made in America; no thanks to Obummer"....I mostly ignored that and commented that huge numbers of items are still produced, consumed, and shipped from the US.
This led to a comment that this will improve in 9 days when we "Take back America and vote that man out of office"....I couldn't stop myself and said that I disagreed and that President Obama had done a reasonable job and I was voting for his re-election.
The resulting, well deranged ranting that followed was amazing.
He skipped from his personnel factoid to factoid with no regard for logic or accuracy...starting off that the GNP is 2!....yes 2 and that under Bush it was 8!...yes 8.........?...?..?
I eventually got him to indicate he meant the rate of change and when I pointed out that at the end of the Bush administration that it was negative he both denied it was and couldn't even accept this fact. Note that the 2008 Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4 numbers along with the 2009 Q1 (still Bush)are actually 0, 1, -.02, -2.7, -1.11.
I tried to point out that the Stock Market Dow had doubled under Obama and that under Bush I lost 50% of my portfolio which has only now recovered completely/....heresy, you would have though that I was the one deranged.
This led to how Obama hates Jews, he being a Jew he knew this...which led to me saying that I did not support most of Israeli policy especially with regards to the West Bank Occupation....wow this just caused even more intense "derangement" it seemed.
Quickly he claimed I hated Jews (I don't), that I would have supported and apologized for Hitler (no, I wouldn't have...that would have been Conservatives and Fascists not Liberal Progresives), that there are no such people as Palestinians who are just Jordanians, Turks, etc. and should just be evicted from the West Bank which would solve the problem (very Romney remark), and that all Muslims hate Jews and that all Muslims are Arabs and that all Arabs hate Jews and that his people know this being sensitized by history to hate.
His parting talking point was that in 9 days they were taking back the US.
My parting question, among many that he could not, or would not answer, was to question "Take it back from who?".
This type of blind loyalty to a foreign land/government (Israel) is a modern derangement which I do not understand. Israel has been an ally, a bribed one to the tune of billions of dollars a year propping up their economy, yet it has not always been a good one or a honest one. They have their own goals, agendas, and faults which often are at cross purposes to ours and the continuing blot of the West Bank Apartheid and the Palestinians ejected over the decades from Israel proper poisons everything.
His blind loyalty to the meme/talking point that once Romney is President is all turns around and tens of millions will be employed suddenly and that businesses will rocket to the stars is also a derangement.....he had no answer as to how this will happen, just that it will happen..Oh another factoid was that Bush unemployment was never higher than 5%.....um when Bush handed the office over in February 2009 the unemployment rate was 8.3%...something again this "I know because I am a Jew" speaker both could not and would not accept. His worlds facts are....well different than the rest of the worlds.
And of course it all is Obamas fault (he could not say that Obama was President by the way...just could not utter the words), and that Bush was the bestest President, and that....sputter...sputter...sound byte...talking point...rewind, repeat.
True blind allegiance, ignoring all data, and demonizing any who do not toe the line and follow the herd.....deranged is my word for it; perhaps others have a better one?
He then left in his large, expensive, new big bed truck after saying that Romney will get the gubmint off the back of small business and all will be ponies and thin mints (ok not the pony and thin mints, I extrapolated that)(note that big gubmint must be really terrible on him since he can only afford the one brand new super gas guzzling 4x4).
I finished my coffee and bagel, had my meeting with a fellow businessman who then arrived, chatted about fishing, the decline of the PNW Salmon (he is a Phd Fisheries Biologist of decades), water issues, and the changing climate. Then I zipped off on my scooter to get other work done at home; at 84 mpg on the scooter I really do not worry about gas prices all that much for myself...just for the 4x4 crowd who often explode in anger and derangement at bicycles and scooter rider for some odd reason.
I have met the enemy, and he is our fellow ignorant, deranged, and brainwashed citizen.
