I, like you, it seems have many conflicting opinions on lincoln.
The treasures maintained by the NPS as I have previously linked which provide full link through to all of the Douglas debates (e.g.) are, in no uncertain terms, remarkable, and for or against, should be required reading for considered citizens. I consider you to be one of those considered citizens. Important: Lincoln lost the election in that case, a seat to be held later by Barack Obama. But Lincoln lost (or failed to win) the seat, and listen to the content or read to the content or whatever, Sen Douglas was no dull knife.
They were amazing days, and while some lines of Lincolns content were repulsive to me and it clearly seems to be by you as well, the migration and summation of the Lincoln content is a much more complex story.
In the end, I would at the time go with Lincoln over any other available vote. Somethime we look back and we see words and stuff of what we can only call firging dirtbags, as you have sensibly ascribed to Lincoln.
But do it this way .... if you were there then, who would you vote for, and who would you have been proud of voting for?
