Civil Rights Act of 1964 Vote totals

Totals are in "Yea Nay" format:

The original House version: 290 to 130 (69 to 31%).

Cloture in the Senate: 71 to 29 (71 to 29%).

The Senate version: 73 to 27 (73 to 27%).

The Senate version, as voted on by the House: 289 to 126 (70 to 30%).


By partyThe original House version:

Democratic Party: 152 to 96 (61 to 39%)
Republican Party: 138 to 34 (80 to 20%)

Cloture in the Senate:

Democratic Party: 44 to 23 (66 to 34%)
Republican Party: 27 to 6 (82 to 18%)

The Senate version:

Democratic Party: 46 to 21 (69 to 31%)
Republican Party: 27 t0 6 (82 to 18%)

The Senate version, voted on by the House:

That may be correct as times change. It wasn't the case 45 years ago when the GOP inherited an awful lot new republicans from the democratic "solid south" following the almost entirely dem passage of civil rights legislation. Coincidence, nah. Makes me hum Abraham, Martin and John "But it seems the good they die young." I'd like to think it's different now but voting "habits" are passed to following generations thus the south remains solidly republican - even though racism may no longer be the reason.
